From "The Simpsons" to "Startup": Insider.Pro has compiled a list of TV shows, the creators of which couldn’t miss and pass by the trending topic of cryptocurrency.

If we are to talk about series and cryptocurrencies, the first TV show that comes to mind is "StartUp" with Martin Freeman and Adam Brody. It is the first series where cryptocurrency is not only mentioned but lies at the foundation of its plot. Bitcoin became a prototype for its TV version - GenCoin token. The consultant of the series was Brian Stoeckert of Stratis Advisory. In an interview with CNBC, he said:

"People have heard about digital currency, but they really don't understand how it operates. They just see it on the headlines. This is one way they can follow a storyline and get a unique perspective on it."

However, the first time crypto was mentioned in non-documentary films was much earlier. Back in 2012, in the episode of the CBS series "A Good Wife", the main character protects a lawyer who, under threat of arrest, keeps the name of his client secret - the inventor of an online currency. Therefore the heroine has to learn how bitcoin works.

Of course, cryptocurrency was mentioned in "The Simpsons" as well. In one of the episodes back in 2013, Krusty confessed that he went bankrupt because he was unsuccessful at the ponies and even less fortunate in the bitcoin market.

Soon bitcoins appeared in the "Almost Human" series, but in the form of a huge flash drive (even though the plot take place in 2048).

The writers of "Blacklist" series decided not to invent any fictional cryptocurrency and simply showed how Ripple works.

It is not surprising that the TV show about hackers and cyber-security— "Mr. Robot", also touched upon the subject of crypto. Here is what one of the protagonists says about Bitcoin:

«The problem here is that hard cash is fading rapidly. That's just the way of the world right now. And bitcoin is spreading. And if bitcoin takes over, we are all in a world of hell».

In 2017, creators of "The Big Bang Theory" series released an episode titled "The Bitcoin Entanglement". Like many others, the characters remembered that they once mined bitcoin and even saved them on a flash drive, which they of course lost.

Also, bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies were mentioned in such TV series as "Blindspot", "iZombie", and "Person of Interest". Cryptocurrencies are becoming more and more integrated into our lives, and the film industry cannot leave that without attention, so it's likely that there we will be seeing more TV shows like “Startup”.

Recently, Canadian filmmakers produced a blockbuster film called “Сryptо”. The plot focuses on laundering digital money. Starring Beau Knapp, Alexis Bledel (The Handmaid's Tale, Gilmore Girls), Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight), Luke Hemsworth (Westworld), Jeremie Harris (Legion) and Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men). The film creators claim that сryptocurrency “has never been explored in film in such a nuanced and exciting way.”
